Chatting with Snow White

Female Anna's hummingbird

Abstract:

I explore the concept of butterfly-hummingbird connections all the time with clients.  It is not the breadth (butterflies flit around from one flower to the next) but the depth (hummingbird are laser focused) of our connections that makes life worth living.  That said, be careful not to rely on only one person for your depth.  Focus like the hummingbird, but not too much.  And if you are a butterfly explore why you may be afraid to get to0 close to any one person.  In short, moderation is damn sexy!

This past week I was invited to a party honoring women in media.

I thought, “Heck, I can honor that, and I bet I will meet all kinds of interesting people.”

I ended up sitting next to a fascinating woman. She was young, vibrant, and absolutely open about her life.

Let’s face it, it is rare to meet a person who is truly revealing during an initial chit-chat. I realized how I cherish these kinds of connections.  We spoke for almost the entire party, unintentionally ignoring all the other guests.

It turns out I was speaking with Snow White of the ABC series “Once Upon a Time.”   She was smart, engaging, curious and, frankly, gorgeous inside and out!

People have often characterized me as a social butterfly.  But as I left the party I realized that my form of extroversion is more in line with the hummingbird.  I am more focused and faithful.  I love deep personal connections.  When I find one, I revel in the experience of mutual self-exploration.

Whether you are more extroverted or introverted, realize that life is not as binary as we sometimes presume.  There are many ways to “work a room.”   My way speaks to who I am.  I am more of a social hummingbird.

This week explore your butterfly-hummingbird range.  If I found my Snow White this way, you may end up sitting next to your Prince Charming, gay or straight or anywhere in between!
