Success, Rightly Understood
(audio version available at the end of this blog)
Have you ever noticed when you ask someone, “Hey what is new,” or “How are things going,” their answer invariably incorporates some work-related accomplishment?
Success Myopia
On the one hand, I am thrilled this is typical. Accomplishments greatly contribute to our emotional well-being. On the other, if we focus like a laser only on achievements, we suffer from success myopia, where it is quite possible our determined efforts undermine a comprehensively successful life, one nourished by excellent relationships and imbued with deep meaning and positive emotions.
Success U is Kinetic’s answer to success myopia. And another cohort is forming right now.
And what is Success U’s cure for this narrow minded understanding of success?
We start with a robust definition: Success is a process of goal achievement that enhances our emotional and physical well-being while we avoid the crippling cycle of burnout.
The research that supports the following notion is vast but often overlooked: People who are well, both physically and emotionally, are more likely to achieve their goals. And I am not just talking about average goals; these are goals that give us goosebumps every time we re-tell the story of how it all went down.
So stop thinking that if you get that raise or that new home that you will finally “be happy.” Happy people are the achievers, (and for those people who are miserable and achieving, well they are outliers, the exceptions that prove the rule).
The Success U Nitty Gritty
Just because Success U has an expansive definition of success does not make it some woo-wooey “let’s all just get along” seminar. We get down to business right away.
In fact, students are challenged to declare a primary and a secondary goal before the class begins. Then we explore seven modules that allow us to adapt and refine our goals so that each conforms to our definition of success.
The small steps students take throughout the course make their lofty goals less lofty, and reachable. It is amazing how much progress is made when each week, and even each day, we climb just one step closer.
I have watched countless people achieve their goals without sacrificing their happiness or sabotaging their relationships. Some students obtain the job they have always wanted, others start businesses, still others walk away from circumstances destroying their chances to move ahead. I have seen students complete the screenplay they have worked on for twenty years, compose music they never thought possible, and write that book they have had in their head forever. Some students make friendships that will last a lifetime and still others finally fall in love with an optimal mate.
Success is a process and the course teaches all the skills and strategies to live successfully in a supportive yet challenging environment.
Believe me, these life changes do not happen magically. It takes more than a webinar or weekend seminar to create lasting change in our lives. Don’t I wish I had the magic success pill.
Actually that is not true, the hard work is foundational and revealing as it contributes substantially to success.
So join us for the next session of Success U.
