Sacred

Wow, what a “gay” week.

The Supreme Court hearings related to both The Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8 have me thinking this Easter season about what is sacred in our lives.

To me marriage is sacred and it’s about . . .

1. Two adults who love each other

2. Two adults who want to share a life together

3. Two adults who want to celebrate that love and sharing with other loved ones

4. Two loving adults who desire to have the same rights and responsibilities as any other two loving adults under the law of the country . . .

Just because the LGBT community and its straight allies have fought long and hard for this sacred idea does not mean the journey is over.  On the contrary, from both a legal and societal perspective we are still a generation or more away from that happening.

You can legislate and adjudicate civil rights but changing hearts and minds is a slower and more deliberate process.

After all, it is human to be fearful of change.  And no doubt gay marriage will change America.

More young men and young women will stop thinking they have limits placed on their liberty, limits that thrust them into closets of shame and self-loathing.

More young men and women will stop feeling that their orientation undermines the sanctity of “this or that” held dear to their loved ones, a feeling which only in fact undermines the familial bonds so important for growth and self-understanding.

More young men and women will stop acting like their lives lack meaning and purpose, generating a “lacking mentality” that creates a recipe for self-abuse.

In fact, more young men and women will think, feel and act equal . . . equal to the task of carving out a life worth living and one steeped in rights and responsibilities.

Imagine no more accepted defenses for discrimination and no more accepted defenses for not following your dreams . . .

That’s sacred!
