The Boston Bombings
How do we get over it? I have no simple formula. Terror is terror, and whether 3000 or 3 die, the fear right now is palpable, especially if you live in New England.
What we do with the fear, though, is our choice.
But aren’t our actions a result of our feelings? Sometimes. But as with all things involving humans this ignores the power of experiential growth (and is an oversimplification of scientific research).
What you do (i.e. your actions) very often influences how you think and how you feel.
This past week’s horrific and violent attacks in Boston provide us with an opportunity to focus on our actions . . . on how we grieve.
We cannot replace the lives lost, but we can act in a way that helps us to begin a healing process that has the potential to lead to individual, community and national growth and understanding.
So many people are asking: What do we do now? Here are some ideas…
First, my mother used to always say, “Express!” when she noticed I was having difficulty feeling/expressing an emotion.
Bottle up the emotion or attempt to ignore the demons and you will spend ten years processing what otherwise could be processed in a fraction of the time.
So if you are angry or sad . . . show your anger or your sadness in your own way (just be safe!). Let it out and grow from it.
Second, unite and reach out to those you love and those you have yet to love. Spend the time we take for granted sharing moments of connection and introspection.
Resist the temptation to isolate yourself, thinking that being alone you will find answers when perhaps there are no answers to find. This is a lost opportunity for the comfort and connection we can only receive as a member of a group.
I love Boston. I love it because it was home for almost a decade of my life. Boston was where I fell in love, helped to raise my nieces and nephews, taught amazing students and shared incredible moments of joy with friends.
Boston . . . Express and unite.
We love you!
